風神雷神図屏風 / Fujin Raijin Folding Screen

現在、昨年夏にご注文をいただいた《風神雷神図屏風》の制作を進めております。

構想を深めるため、昨年9月末には京都・三十三間堂を訪れ、風神雷神像を拝観いたしました。残念ながら撮影は叶いませんでしたが、その躍動感あふれる造形に接し、圧倒されつつも長く対峙するなかで、多くの示唆を得ることができました。

その足で、かねてより訪れたいと願っていた泉妙院の尾形光琳の墓所にも足を運びました。そこには酒井抱一によって建立された墓碑もあり、静寂の中に佇むその碑の前に立つことで、深い感慨を覚えるとともに、その偉大な存在を身近に感じるひとときとなりました。

さらにその裏手にある、尾形家の菩提寺として知られる妙顕寺にも立ち寄りました。

同寺は、光琳および弟・乾山とゆかりの深い日蓮宗の大本山であり、境内には尾形家の墓所や光琳の石碑が今も静かに佇んでおります。

泉妙院と妙顕寺の両方を巡ることで、尾形家の歴史と光琳の足跡をより立体的に感じ取ることができ、意義深い体験となりました。

こうした体験と感動を礎に、5月になってようやく下図が完成いたしました。

このテーマは、依頼をいただかなければ自分からは挑戦することのなかったものであり、この機会に深く感謝しております。

完成の際には、改めてこの場でご紹介させていただきます。

Currently, I am working on the creation of the Fujin Raijin Folding Screen (Wind and Thunder Gods), which was commissioned last summer.

To deepen my vision for the piece, I visited Sanjūsangen-dō in Kyoto at the end of September last year to view the statues of the Wind and Thunder Gods. Although photography was not permitted, I was deeply moved by their dynamic forms. Standing before them for an extended time, I found myself overwhelmed and inspired, gaining many valuable insights.

On the same day, I made my way to Senmyō-in, a temple I had long hoped to visit, to pay my respects at the grave of Ogata Kōrin. There, I found a monument erected by his disciple Sakai Hōitsu. Standing before it in the quiet solitude of the grounds, I felt not only a deep reverence for Kōrin’s artistic legacy but also a strong sense of his presence.

I then visited Myōken-ji, located just behind Senmyō-in, which is known as the family temple of the Ogata clan.A major temple of the Nichiren sect, Myōken-ji has strong historical ties to both Kōrin and his brother, the potter Kenzan. The temple grounds still house the family grave and a stone monument dedicated to Kōrin.

Visiting both Senmyō-in and Myōken-ji allowed me to experience the history of the Ogata family and the life of Kōrin in a much more vivid and tangible way. It was an experience of great meaning to me as an artist.

With the impressions and inspiration gained from these visits as a foundation, I was finally able to complete the initial draft of the composition this May.

This is a theme I would likely never have tackled on my own without such a commission, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity.
