9月のある日、日経アートのご担当者さまが、ご注文くださったお客様のもとへ作品を無事にお届けくださいました。お客様が作品の前で音楽を聴きながら静かに向き合ってくださっているとうかがい、その光景を思い描くたびに、心がそっとほどけていくのを感じます。

きっと、こうした瞬間のために描いているのだと、あらためて思いました。作品が誰かの日常の中で息づいていると知ることほど、私にとって幸せなことはありません。

今回の「風神雷神図屏風」では、古典の形式を踏まえながらも、単なる模倣ではなく、「内なる自然」を描きたいと考えました。

屏風は、平面でありながら立体的な空間を内包する形式です。その構造そのものに強い魅力を感じています。

左右の神像は対峙しながらも、互いに見えない「風」と「音」の流れを送り合い、画面全体を包むひとつの気の世界をつくり出している。私は、自然現象を神聖化するのではなく、人の内に潜む自然の力―心の中に息づく風や雷―を表そうとしました。

風神の風は「怒り」ではなく「意志」として、雷神の響きは「破壊」ではなく「覚醒」として描いています。

人の心にも、嵐のように荒れる瞬間や、風が通り抜けるように澄み渡る瞬間があり、 そこには外界の自然と同じ摂理が働いていると感じます。

その心の現象を可視化する助けとなるのが金箔です。 金地は空気のように息付いています。それは「神域」を象徴し現世と霊的世界を隔てる膜のような空間をつくり出してくれます。

風や雷が流れ込む大気そのものとして、画面の中で呼吸しているのです。

金箔の光は、見る角度や光源によって表情を変え、その変化が時間とともに生きるリズムを画面に刻みます。 この金の揺らぎが、屏風という立体的な構造と呼応し、 外の光を映し込みながら、内なる自然へと静かに通じる空間を生み出しているように感じます。

One day in September, a representative from Nikkei Art safely delivered the artwork to the customer who had placed the order. I was told that the customer was quietly contemplating the piece while listening to music, and every time I imagine that scene, I feel my heart gently unwind. It made me realize once again that these are precisely the moments I paint for. There is no greater happiness for me than knowing that my work is breathing within someone's daily life.

In this “Fujin Raijin-zu Byōbu” (Folding Screen of the Wind and Thunder Gods), while respecting classical forms, I sought not mere imitation but to depict an “inner nature.” A folding screen, though flat in appearance, is a format that inherently contains three-dimensional space, and I am deeply fascinated by its structural presence.

The deities on the left and right face each other, yet exchange invisible currents of wind and sound, creating a unified world of qi that envelops the entire composition. Rather than deifying natural phenomena, I sought to express the natural forces that reside within people—the wind and thunder that breathe in the human heart.

The wind of the Wind God is depicted not as anger but as will, and the resonance of the Thunder God not as destruction but as awakening. The heart, too, has moments of storm-like turbulence and moments of serene clarity, as if a breeze had passed through; I feel that the same principles governing external nature are present there.

Gold leaf serves as a means to visualize these inner phenomena. The gold ground breathes like air itself. It symbolizes a sacred realm, forming a membrane-like space that separates the mundane from the spiritual. As the very atmosphere into which wind and thunder flow, it breathes within the screen.

The light reflected by the gold leaf shifts in expression depending on one’s angle and the surrounding light, and these changes inscribe a living rhythm that evolves over time. I feel that this shimmering gold, resonating with the folding screen’s three-dimensional structure, reflects external light while quietly opening a space that leads inward, toward one’s own inner nature.
